Like the Trabant or the Wartburg, the IFA W50 was one of the defining features of road traffic in the German Democratic Republic, or GDR for short. Built between 1965 and 1990 at the Automobilwerke Ludwigsfelde in an almost unbelievable number of over 570,000 units, the IFA W50 was so popular that it was even immortalized on the back of the GDR‘s 5-mark bill. Development work on the successor to the IFA S4000 had already begun in 1959 at the „Ernst Grube“ motor vehicle plant in Werdau. Hence the type designation W50 in which the „W“ stood for Werdau and the „50“ for 5 tons payload.
